What it means

Unearned confidence, deployed knowingly. The sunglasses face marks the moment you do something mildly clever and would like everyone to notice — and the deliberate over-confidence is the joke. It is the direct descendant of the “deal with it” animation, where sunglasses drop onto a character's face in slow motion.

Where each character comes from

Every kaomoji is borrowed type. None of these characters were designed to be part of a face.

CharCode pointUnicode nameRole in the face
U+2310REVERSED NOT SIGNThe arm of the glasses, hooking back toward the ear.
U+25A0BLACK SQUAREThe two opaque lenses.
_U+005FLOW LINEThe bridge across the nose, doubling as a flat mouth.

Assembled from geometric shapes rather than letters — the black square (U+25A0) and the reversed not sign (U+2310), a mathematical symbol for logical negation. Nothing in this face was designed for faces. The lenses are opaque because a filled square reads as “can't see the eyes”, which is what makes the expression unreadable and therefore cool.

How to type it without breaking it

Copy it. The ⌐ in particular is a mathematical operator with no keyboard position. Some people drop it and send (■_■), which reads as a stare rather than sunglasses — the hook is what makes them glasses.

When to use it

After a small win. After a pun you're proud of. Before or after the phrase “deal with it”. Best used sparingly and self-mockingly; sent sincerely, it does not land.

FAQ

What does (⌐■_■) mean?
It's a face wearing sunglasses — the ⌐ forms the frame arm and the ■ squares are opaque lenses. It reads as confident, cool, or “deal with it”, almost always self-mockingly.
Why are the lenses solid black?
Because U+25A0 is a filled square, the eyes are completely hidden. An unreadable expression is what makes the face read as cool rather than merely bespectacled — the hollow version (□_□) reads as shocked instead.
